Last week I wrote to you in the final midst of panic— it was just a few days before almost 300 student journalists descended upon Bristol for the annual Student Publication Association National Conference. Or, as those who attend it affectionally call it, #SPANC24. This week, I’m writing to you from the other side — the final shots of adrenaline are long gone, replaced instead by a deep tiredness I genuinely only feel once a year and a muscle I definitely pulled while lugging 300 tote bags onto a train.
But, perhaps the biggest thing I take from SPANC every year, is optimism. In a world surrounded by redundancies and swirling tech changes, it’s so easy to become despondent. It’s much harder to do that when you’re surrounded by incredible reporters at the start of their careers, already doing incredible things. They’re building apps, exposing universities who are wasting millions, and reviving publications from the brink of extinction. They’re also getting to the conference at 9.30am after a very late one to have a CV checked and learn from one another.
So, if you’re ever feeling despondent about the future, I’d urge you to look around and seek out new shoots — our full list of winners at the weekend is probably a good place to start. I’d urge you to find the solidarity in community, to find your people, to work together and create something better. And, finally, to those of you who are just starting out, keep on doing what you’re doing. From the bottom of my heart, I truly know that you’ve got this.
