Jobs and Opps at the BBC, The Sunday Times, Tatler, And Many, Many More 🥐
Everything you should apply for this week.
I’ll be honest; the week leading up to this newsletter has been slightly fraught — so I hope you’ll excuse me for the lateness of this newsletter. I’m one of the trustees at the Student Publication Association (SPA), an incredible volunteer-run charity which supports student journalists across the UK and Ireland. It’s incredibly close to my heart, having stumbled across it about a decade ago, when it was a fledging effort by a small group of students who believed a support network should exist.
In the ten years since, it’s fair to say I’ve never really left. I first became a regional officer, a chair, and then, most recently a trustee. At many points, my friends and family have asked when it will end and why I care so much. At times, I’ve often asked myself the same question; especially this week, as we run up to our 11th National Conference in Bristol. Our team are all superstars, but there’s no way to get around the fact you’re a dozen volunteers organising a conference for 300 people. It’s going to be stressful at some point, no matter what mitigations you take.
The answer, in truth, is twofold. Firstly, the SPA was one of the most pivotal building blocks of my own career. As someone coming to the industry with no connections or insider knowledge, I didn’t know where to start. This support network gave me some of my best and closest friends. It gave me the confidence to reach out to people, put myself forward, and just go and make stuff. It was, undoubtedly, one of the major catalysts for Journo Resources. I want to make sure other people can have that.
Secondly, the SPA is an endless source of hope in an industry typified by gloom and dread. Every year I’m heartened when reading entries to our national awards, with too many incredible stories and innovations to recount. And, hundreds of these amazing people decide to take a weekend of their lives to connect and grow. We all know that the next generation is incredible already, but to see it in action is truly special.
So, as we pull together the final strands for what I know will be an amazing conference, remember that whoever you are, student or otherwise, and no matter how tough it gets, there is a community out there who want to help and support you — and the future really does have hope. Oh, and if you’re on the organising team with me, we are so nearly there gang, we’ve got this 💚
