Jobs and Opps at The Bureau, ITV, The Bristol Cable, The Royal Aeronautical Society, and Many Many More ☄️
Plus, a bonus picture of a very cute Highland cow.
It’s been a while since I (it’s Jem here today, hi!) sat down to write the opening letter of this newsletter. The last time I put keystrokes to Substack was back in June, more than a month ago. It’s the longest gap I’ve ever taken. Usually, my working week revolves around this jumble of letters and links. This newsletter was here before Journo Resources even existed — it was the seed that started things and remains our most meaningful community. It’s also a constant. No matter what else is going on in life or work, no matter how chaotic my mind feels, there’s always time on a Tuesday to trawl methodically through web pages for jobs. It’s stability.
But, over the last few weeks, I’ve been away. My brilliant colleagues have taken the helm, talking about everything from flip phones to bittersweet goodbyes. It’s been a weird feeling to consume the newsletter as you do — a ping landing on my phone at some point between five and seven in the evening. We’ve always been very heavy on the ‘ish’ with the timing. I’ve tried my best to stay away from Slack and emails over the past month and concentrate on what I set out to do — make use of our annual leave policy to actually take a break and rediscover more joy in my work.
Not content with doing things by halves, this ‘holiday’ was to cycle the 1,000 miles from Lands’ End in Cornwall to John O’Groats at the top of the Scottish Highlands. Sure, it might not exactly be relaxing, but cycling for six to eight hours a day physically forces you to disconnect. I couldn’t take my laptop. I couldn’t ‘just check my phone’. I didn’t have time to take meetings or calls. Instead, I cycled, following the arrows in front of me on my cycle computer. The only way to go was forward.
I cycled up hills that made me cry. I cycled down hills that made me cry. I saw sunsets that looked like the sky was burning. One of the best days of the entire trip was also one of the wettest days of my life. It included a ludicrous stop at an outdoor brine swimming pool. And now, after three and a half weeks, I’m back writing this newsletter, while my colleagues are off on their own adventures. I feel incredibly grateful to be here and I’m excited to see what comes next.
