Jobs and Opps at Times Higher Education, SWNS, the BBC, China Dialogue, and Many, Many More🏫
Plus a goodbye letter from our head of content Catharina👋🏼
Hi, it’s Catharina here with some bittersweet news — this is going to be my last newsletter as tomorrow will be my final day as Journo Resources’ head of content. I will soon be moving back to Hong Kong to be with family and further my editorial career across the globe. Almost every flat surface in my home is strewn with belongings as I struggle to pack, but I wanted to take some time to reflect on my days at JR anyway.
During my time in this role, I’ve established our house style guide, set up the JR Book Club, created a content and social strategy, seen our annual print magazine through to publication, mentored fellows and junior writers, sub-edited and published tonnes of great articles, put together several issues of this jobs and opps newsletter, interviewed talented movers and shakers in the industry, hosted some fantastic events, been productive with you in our co-working sessions, written some articles of my own, grown our dedicated community on Discord, and had the chance to connect with amazing journalists and writers across the UK — including you!
Notably, I also worked closely with JR’s small but powerful team, without whom my work days would be nowhere near as fun. If you’ve been around for a while, you’ll know that our founding director Jem started Journo Resources from her bedroom seven years ago. Till this day she is an absolute powerhouse whose to-do list is full to bursting on the daily, tirelessly helming the JR ship to bring journalists everywhere our range of great resources. It’s been an absolute honour to work as her first mate. (Okay, I’m stopping the sailing metaphor now.)
You’ll also have heard from our staff writer Hannah in several newsletter openers. If there’s ever been an overachiever, it is Hannah. She’s the unflagging person behind our copious tweets (or should we now call them X’s?), is doing a smashing job making TikToks, and still finds time to write a great number of fantastic articles. Hannah’s doing her NCTJ right now, but even without the formal qualification, she’s already a talented journalist to keep an eye on.
Journo Resources also wouldn’t function the same without the work of Jack, April, and Bex, who take the lead on our design, our range of lists, and client outreach, respectively. All this to say, these are the fantastic people who have supported my time as head of content here, and as much as I am excited about whatever awaits me in Asia, I will miss the JR team greatly. Please show their work plenty of love and support!
Since we’ll need editorial help with me gone, we’re currently hiring a deputy editor. If you’ve been a journalist for a few years, with some line managing or mentorship experience, and great sub-editing skills, we want to hear from you by the end of this week! If you have questions or want to hear from someone who has done the job, you can reach out to me personally on Twitter at @catharinacheung, Threads at @catharina.cheung, Mastodon at @catharina@zirk.us, or Bluesky at @catharina.bsky.social.
The journalism industry right now may not feel like one with the brightest future, but it is our firm belief that journalism is absolutely needed and that all sectors across society should equally be able to consume and access it. I hope you’re as excited as I am to see what great products and resources JR will continue to bring out in support of journalists everywhere. Keep writing and keep the dream alive. Until then, this is Cat, signing off. 💙
