All of the opportunities you need to know about this week 🌻
Hello and welcome to today’s newsletter! I’m Fern, a trainee journalist here at JR (alongside Tom, who’s already introduced himself!) Along with Jem, we’re trying to ramp things up at Journo Resources – more website content, more social media presence, and more incredible events being lined up for the next few months.
I’ve also learnt more about the industry in the past few weeks than I ever had before, but I’m still finding my feet, unsure of which direction I’ll take. Will I end up having a niche or specific areas I write about most? Will I focus on news pieces, or features articles? Whatever I decide to pursue, I know that Journo Resources will continue to help me as it already has. So far, I’ve spoken to a host of journalists about their experiences on Universal Credit – something that isn’t often discussed. I’m looking forward to shedding some light on this and sharing their stories.
I’m from Gateshead, though I currently live in Leeds. To me, as for many of you, it’s crucial that the industry makes a move up North. In recent years, things have begun to change; the BBC and ITV have both established bases here in Leeds, with new jobs and opportunities emerging. Yet, I believe there is still more that can be done. Hopefully this is something I’ll get a chance to look more into soon - but for now, I strongly recommend both Northern Natter and The Peak District for the Northern journalists amongst us, as well as our own site for jobs and opportunities.
