Jobs and Opps at The Bristol Cable, The Racing Post, Fabulous and Many, Many More ❤️
Everything you need to have you on your application list this week ✨
So, it’s not Jem writing up here today! I’m Tom - one of the new trainee journalists at Journo Resources alongside Fern. I’ll be writing features, working across social media and making sure all our resources are up to date. Like many of you reading this newsletter, I’m quite new to the world of journalism so it’s exciting to be getting such great practical experience.
I’m from Manchester and currently edit an online arts and culture magazine called Salt Magazine which I set up last year with a couple of friends. I’ve also done a fair amount of work experience, mostly whilst at university in Bristol, and have developed a particular interest in social affairs, housing and regional journalism. I still have a lot to learn and hope that as I stumble my way through the industry, my experiences may be useful to others in a similar position. Hopefully, you’ll hear more from me both in this newsletter and on the wider website over the coming months.
There’s a cliché that weary, hardened journalists will say their biggest tip to those at the start of their career is to get out of the industry while you still can. But, at talks, conferences and workshops, I’ve found that the reality is quite the opposite. Many established journalists say that new, eager reporters are needed now more than ever, in a world of misinformation and fake news. I’m excited to start talking to them and share their advice and wisdom with you all.
Journalism is full of unknowns. When do you actually become a journalist? How do you navigate a newsroom? The playing field is - often deliberately - uneven and there isn’t a set path which everyone moves along together at the same speed. That’s why I think Journo Resources is important and I hope that I can help shed some much needed light on the industry.
It’s A Brave New World For Us, Can You Help Us Make It?
This week marks the start of a new chapter for Journo Resources. Our director goes full-time, and we also welcome three new members of staff to help us step up our free to access content and resources.
