Jobs and Opps at Time Out, Hashtag Our Stories, The Conversation and Many More š
Everything you need to apply for in journalism this week āļø
This newsletter is brought to you from Carlisle, where I arrived late on Sunday, just as the Euros went into extra time. Trust me, if you thought the fact we went to penalties was stressful enough, I can promise you that trying to run to your hotel with a lot of gear in tow in time to whack the TV on really dials it up a notch. Props to the Premier Inn staff though ā whatever theyāre paid, it isnāt enough.
Iām in Carlisle because my partner is cycling from Landās End to John OāGroats. If youāre interested, that 1,008 miles in total if you arenāt a crow and donāt want to cycle on a load of grim A roads. If youāre super interested, hereās his YouTube updates of the glorious countryside. Iām here for his penultimate rest day, because a) itās nice to see him and b) Iāve never been to Carlisle before and Iāve also heard thereās a castle.
However, despite being here Iāve still been working. Itās fair to say that yesterday I stretched the Premier Inn free WiFi to its limits. While some people might view this as a negative āĀ after all, it is vital to take a break ā as I sat outside last night with a glass of wine, it got me thinking that this is what freelancing (and work in general) should be about. As a freelancer and business owner, I have no fixed office I head to every day. Even for those of us that do, itās certainly become elastic during the last 18 months.
When you realise you donāt always need to be in the same physical space, all sorts of other opportunities open up. As long as I have a laptop and WiFi I can work. But I can also go and walk along Hadrianās Wall afterwards. Or take a coffee break at a cafe I really havenāt been to before. If anything, Iād argue that getting out of your own area makes you work better āĀ you break out of a rut, see new things, and generate new ideas. Thatās basically my three point argument to take to your boss and head off. Signed, a woman off to see a very nice castle now.
