Jobs and Opps at The Washington Post, The Woodland Trust, Tes, and Many Many More 🌳
All of the jobs and opportunities to apply for this week 💌
It would take me a long time to count all of the graduate and trainee schemes I applied for in my last year of university. I’m pretty sure I applied for the BBC’s trainee scheme two or three years in a row, never getting any further than the initial application. Then there was ITV, The Times, The Telegraph, Reuters, The Economist, Falkland Island TV... The list goes on, even I can’t remember all of them. Of course, I wasn’t the only one applying either. Being on a journalism course, it felt like a group exercise, as we all waited to see who would (and wouldn’t) hear back about the next round.
During the last few weeks I’ve watched it all playing out again, as it does every year. So many posts fill our timelines; both the disappointment of not making the cut, or the wondering if anyone else has heard back yet. I’m all for the normalisation of rejection – we need to talk more about what didn’t go right than presenting a sanitising version of the wins. But, at the same time, it got me thinking about how much we pin on graduate schemes as the key to success post uni.
Journalism graduate schemes are all incredible opportunities – but they are far from the only means into the industry. There are dozens of other routes which also include training, progression, and the chance to do great journalism. But, for one reason or other, a lot of us end up apply for the same handful of schemes, viewing them as a key marker of a successful start to your journalism career. So, I wanted to share my two cents, as someone who never ever managed to get through to the second round.
Along with my partner, Jack Dearlove, who never applied to any journo grad schemes, we’ll be running a free session on Wednesday to explore why you’re thinking about a grad scheme and where else those benefits can be found. We’ll be looking at data from our jobs boards, real life case studies, and include practical exercises to improve your job application skills. Even if you can’t make it live, everyone who signs up will get a copy of the recording. We hope to see you there – and do share it with friends!
