So, this is the part of the newsletter where I usually write some kind of introduction — a reflection of sorts on something that’s been noodling about in my brain over the week. Sometimes it’s something big and industry-specific — perhaps a job advert I’ve seen that’s got my back up for some reason. Sometimes it’s something small and personal — last week I wrote about finally going to the dentist. I’ve also been known to write frequent musings on what my cat has taught me about work.
I enjoy the routine of these short reflections — it’s a rare chance to pause and digest the past seven days and look ahead at what’s to come. I love the emails I get back in response and the connections that follow. Apart from a two-week closure at the end of each year, we put this newsletter together every week. That’s 50 tiny snippets of reflections a year. At a guess, I’d say about 80 per cent are written by me. I love it — but this is a very long-winded way of saying the tank is completely empty today.
I’ve pondered what I might write here all day — but it’s now 6.33pm and I’ve still got nothing. My brain feels like it’s disintegrated into a mush lately, as life keeps rattling on past, a terrifyingly long train of big decisions, unforeseen emergencies, strategic thinking, and day-to-day fire-fighting. So, for this week only, I’m going to give my brain a break and rely on my favourite fallback — pictures of my cat. For now, the out-of-office is on and the swimming pool calls. I’ll be back next week.
