Good evening — or bonsoir, if you’re familiar with a bit of French! It’s Kayleigh here, Journo Resources’ deputy editor, fresh off the back of some annual leave on the continent. Regular readers may recall a couple of weeks ago when our staff writer, Hannah, shared that we were both — consecutively and coincidentally — about to jet off to Paris. Mine was an unexpected trip; a mutual friend having to unfortunately drop out meant that a last-minute ticket was going free.
As a self-confessed planner, surprise changes to my forecasted schedule come with a sprinkle of discomfort. Yes, I Duolingo French and have Paris on my 2024 manifestation board, but do I have the time and money? Can I still meet my agreed deadlines? Is that a birthday or two on the horizon?
A few years ago, I made an agreement with myself to just say ‘yes’ to invites and opportunities and spend less time overthinking. Or, as one friend summarises: ‘Just do it for the story’. But, recently, I realised that I’d got out of the habit and it was high time to shake up my life again. So, I panic-bought a transitional season trench coat, created an extensive Google Map of things to do in Paris (thank you, social media hivemind 💜), and flew off for some culture, good bread, and better cheese. While there, I exhausted many a museum, scaled the Eiffel Tower on foot, sipped champagne watching burlesque, and lost my souvenir book at a very intimate jazz gig.
Needless to say, I had a fabulous time but, importantly, I came back relaxed, inspired, and excited for the coming months. So here’s to embracing spontaneity, recognising when to dip out, and creating a manifestation board. Blessings come when you least expect them.
