Jobs and Opps at the BBC, KentOnline, Wasafiri, Eat Real Snack and Many, Many More 🥨
Everything that should be on your list to apply for this week.
This is far from an original thought — but god, I hate my email inbox. Right now, there are 162 unread emails in my Journo Resources inbox and a further 423 in our general account. It’s not a lot in comparison to some journalists, but over the years I’ve fiercely guarded against any press releases or marketing. In short, they’re 585 emails I might actually have to do something about.
As a system, email kind of makes sense — on the surface, it’s basically post landing on your doormat in the digital age. But, really, they’re nothing like the leaflets offering to clean your guttering, tell your landlord to sell your home from under you, or tempt you to order your third takeaway of the week. Not only are there vastly more of them, but they trickle into your consciousness throughout the day, like a tap that won’t stop dripping, that you constantly need to sort.
Sure, there might not be a better option than email yet — and I don’t think I’d make any money without it — but you do have to wonder exactly how we ended up with a system where anyone can show up at any time, demanding our time and attention. It’s something we’ve been talking about a lot over on the Journo Resources Discord this week, and it’s been fascinating to hear how we all attempt to tackle it.
From hiring an assistant (or pretending to hire an assistant) to out-of-offices, deleting the apps from your phone to time blocking, I’d love to hear more about how you all tackle it. I’m not suggesting we’ll solve the conundrum overnight — although that would be nice — but I’m a big believer in sharing the knowledge in case it sparks something that could work for you. I’d love to use this newsletter more collaboratively — so please do drop a comment at the end, chuck us a comment on Insta, or ironically, my inbox is always open to you folk.
PS. If you’re in the mood to send emails yourself, I’m running my freelance pitching masterclass again on Thursday. Tickets are just £4, email if cost is a barrier! Also, thanks to Quinn for the fascinating link above!
