Jobs and Opps at Positive News, Riverford, Great British Chefs, Campaign, and Many More 👩🏽💻
Everything to add to your 'to-do' list this week.
This week we’ve included a very special opportunity in the newsletter. It’s just below the cascade of ‘closing klaxons’ in the awards sections. I wanted to make it stand out, so I’ve put it in bold, but it doesn’t really feel like enough given its importance to me. So, I’m going to talk about it up here as well The award in question is the Georgina Henry Award for Digital Innovation, run by Women in Journalism and presented at the British Journalism Awards in December.
I won the award for Journo Resources back in 2018. It was the second time I’d applied, but I wasn’t much more organised. I remember skiving off my day job to try and put together some kind of costs table on the day of the deadline, before hurridly chucking it into a group chat for feedback. Thankfully, I don’t think my boss was in that day. She was in the day after I’d won though, when I still felt like the whole thing was a hazy dream. I do remember she bought a fantastically large slice of cake to celebrate.
I’ve probably told too many of you this story before, but winning the Georgina Henry Award really made things happen for me. It was the first time someone from the industry gave us a thumbs up — and, of course, a wad of cash, which was baffling handed to me as a handwritten cheque. I was terrified I’d lose it on the way home. Even just sitting at the awards ceremony, felt like a key to another world. When I won, someone from BuzzFeed came over and said hi. But, most of all, it made me believe this funny little newsletter and website might be a thing that could work out.
So, why am I telling you this? Mainly because I want you to apply for it too. To many of us talk ourselves out of putting ourselves forward because we’re not ready, we don’t know anyone, or countless other reasons. This is your notice to push through and do it. The award is currently open for entries until October 15 and any women journalist working in the UK can enter. There’s no fee at any point. The guidelines are broad — your project can be anything that relates to journalism and it can also be at any stage, as long as you can show some work you’ve previously done in the area. We’ve also put together a guide that outlines how to give yourself the best chance. If you apply for just one thing this week, I’d really, really love it to be this one.
