Plus, meet our new deputy editor!
Hi friends, how are we faring in this perpetual gloom and tepid heat? This week’s introduction has been taken over by one writer who is as confused by the temperature as the grey I see outside my window. I’m Kayleigh and I’m thrilled to be writing to you for the first time! As of last week, I took over from Catharina as the new Deputy Editor of Journo Resources, and I’m super excited to be joining Jem and the team. Journo Resources holds a special place in my heart — as I’m sure it does for many of our readers. I’ve been subscribed since 2019 and, just like the current shifting of seasons, this newsletter has been a companion through a pandemic, an assortment of work, and a significant transitional period in my own life.
I can recall a time during various lockdowns when my reliable clients were compromised and it felt impossible to secure new work — including one long Christmas during which I applied for more than 60 jobs and walked away with one day of work and a phone interview. In the midst of such turmoil, this newsletter has been a weekly reminder to me that, despite the perils of a sector that has often made me want to hang up my hat and veer elsewhere, there are still jobs out there.
As a mixed-race woman from a working-class background, and someone who has never been in a position to up sticks to the big smoke, organisations like Journo Resources have been invaluable in demystifying what can so often seem like an elusive and impossible industry to someone on the proverbial “outside”. If you’re a newbie around here, make sure that you’ve checked out our Advice section on the website for tips and stories by established journalists.
Working with writers from marginalised and underrepresented backgrounds is something that I’m really passionate about and something Journo Resources is proud to support with our annual fellowship, the outcomes of which we’re excited to share with you in the coming months! If you consider yourself from such a background and have ideas or comments for us, drop me an email at kayleigh@journoresources.org.uk.
PS. We’ve also been shaking up our TikTok — so go give us a follow over there.
