Jobs and Opps at ITV, Journo Resources, Marie Claire UK, MyLondon, and Many, Many More 🐈⬛
We're hiring a deputy editor and looking for entry-level fellows.
It’s Hannah here with you this week — I wanted to talk about how one of my toxic traits is agreeing to do things without really checking all the details. This is why, on Saturday, I had a surprise adventure. Except it wasn’t really a surprise adventure — I’d signed up for the inaugural Summer Solstice Relay very willingly a few months ago, thinking it was exciting and in the distant future. Fast-forward to this weekend and I had a 14-kilometre overnight leg ahead of me — just one part of a 325-kilometre lap of Norfolk on the Norfolk Coast Path, the Angles Way, and the Peddars Way. All of a sudden, it seemed a tad ambitious.
But I had people depending on me — and my mum to prove wrong, who gave me an arguably deserved eye roll when I told her what I’d forgotten I’d signed up for. Inspired by our workshop on adventure journalism with Elise Downing a few weeks back, I pushed on. “There’s a story in everything,” she’d told us, “it doesn’t have to be this big world-first adventure.” So, I hit the shops, dragging my partner around town to source anti-chafe cream, a hydration pack, and some questionable-looking flashy lights to attach to myself. I was the definition of ‘all the gear, no idea’. As the day and evening went on and carbs were consumed, I started to get more nervous, regretting my past self’s eagerness.

Then, at 10:40pm, an hour and a half later than planned, I began the run. Thank God someone donated me a head torch because my £6 bicycle-style lights were pretty pathetic — they offered no actual help, but did make me look like a human hazard. For someone who’s never done trail running before, let alone in complete darkness, this really was a baptism of fire. Yet it was a weirdly pleasant sense of disorientation, with no idea of how far you’d run or what was left to go. There was something beautiful about running in the dark through nature and sleepy, moonlit hamlets in quiet companionship.
While the darkness may have resulted in nettle stings, more than 30 mosquito bites (not even an exaggeration), and a terrifying moment when we woke what sounded like hundreds of dogs while accidentally trespassing on a poultry farm, there was also a sense of peace and calm. As we reached our handover just after midnight, I was buzzing. It was the furthest I’d run in a long time, and I was still, just about, in one piece. I’ve always felt uneasy doing new things by myself, trying to drag my sister or friends to new things I want to try. But through this mini-adventure, I met new people and impressed myself.
I guess what I’m saying is that perhaps you should trust your past self more — there was probably a reason you agreed to it, even if you didn’t know why at the time. Plus, I’ve already got the running gear now, so even less reason not to sign-up again…
PS. If you’d like to buy a watch-back copy of the event just drop us an email at hello@journoresources.org.uk. You can also read Elise’s book here. Make sure to tell us about your adventures too — we’d love to hear about them, however small.

Please Support Us Through The Cost Of Living Crisis 💚
Every month we need to raise £6,000 — just to cover our staff costs. This is what keeps us going and allows us to create free resources (like this newsletter) for tens of thousands of journalists across the world. But as the cost-of-living crisis goes on, many people are forced to tighten their belts. This makes it harder for us to find funding — and harder for us to help the people who need us. If you can, please consider signing up as a member, it costs just £4 a month and makes a huge difference to what we are able to do.
