Jobs and Opps at HuffPost UK, Full Fact, Business Insider, NFU, and Many, Many More 🥂
Welcome back to our first newsletter of 2024!
And, so, we return. It always feels odd to me to start a Journo Resources week on a Tuesday — beginning the work week by writing this newsletter feels a little like being thrown to the wolves. I love it dearly, but it’s something I want to do after I’ve had a Monday to deal with the chaos of the world. It’s an afternoon task to hide away with headphones and a hot cup — once I’ve deleted the emails that don’t matter, blocked out the tasks that do, and done the mental work to calm my brain.
Sitting down today felt a lot like panic — what could I possibly say that’s useful after a week and a half of back-to-back pantomimes, Chocolate Log, and Monopoly’s less argumentative sibling, Monopoly Deal? What wisdom do I possess about the future of journalism? Does my brain even have a clue what goals I think are worth setting for the year ahead? It seems everyone else on the internet does, but me? I’m not so sure.
So, I mentioned this at our first meeting of the year this morning. As a remote team, our catch-ups are always half work, half random life updates. It was pretty comforting to hear that no one else had actually nailed any resolutions or goals either — we might have a vague idea of what we were pleased with last year or a direction we’d like to travel in — but actual New Year’s Resolutions? Not so much.
Instead, we spent half an hour this afternoon coming up with the list of ins and outs you can see above. It’s a huge mish-mash — beliefs that guide our work, things that really irk us, and themes we think will pop up throughout 2024. More than anything else, it was just fun — and helped to take the pressure away from the grand statements we’re used to seeing at this time of year. Sure, there are a few common themes, but that’s a discussion for another day. In the meantime, please do send us your additions, as I go back to finishing off the last of the Chocolate Log.
