Jobs and Opps at Crowd Network, Full Fact, BBC Radio 1Xtra, Journo Resources and More ✨
Everything you need to apply for this week ⏰
Not to blow my own trumpet, but I think I’m pretty good at giving advice. I hate to see people stressed or worried about something, and I always do my best to remind them of their worth. The only problem: I’m pretty rubbish at taking my own advice - as my sister quite fairly pointed out yesterday. If somebody else was being harsh on themselves for not being productive enough would tell them they should be kinder to themselves and every moment of the day can’t be productive. That’s impossible. Myself? Not so much.
In an age of “hustle culture” and “toxic productivity”, we put a lot of pressure on ourselves to achieve an often unrealistic amount in the working day. As journalists, I think we can be really harsh on ourselves for taking a break – especially when working from home. I’m definitely guilty of it, even though I know if I were working in an office environment, I’d be having a natter with colleagues while making my coffee.
It can be hard to switch off when Twitter is full of people getting the commissions, the jobs and the dream book deals. But that, my friend, is an energy-sapping attitude. In reality, all those people probably feel the same as you at times. It might sound incredibly cliché, but you’ve got to trust the process. Trusting the process means understanding you can’t be productive all of the time. It also means being kinder to yourself and knowing there will be good days and bad days. Talk to yourself like you would if you were giving other people advice. Because, in the words of L’Oréal Paris, “you’re worth it”.
