June, 28, 2022 was a pretty stressful day. My partner and I had booked a holiday to canoe the width of Scotland, from Fort William to Inverness, and that was the day we were due to get the sleeper train up in the evening. A couple of weeks beforehand, I found out I’d been shortlisted for the DBACE awards; an annual competition for social entrepreneurs which comes with prizes of up to £20,000.
The catch? I needed to pitch for it, in person, in central London. But, after a rejection from the competition previously, I was determined to throw everything at the opportunity — even if it meant turning up for the results with a hiking rucksack to put in the cloakroom and juggling this newsletter in between. Because, of course, June 28 was a Tuesday. The whole process was intense; I poured over video recordings, sent my entry to friends, and re-read the guidance endlessly. But, above all, I faced the ick head-on and looked back over my past unsuccessful application.
At the time, I thought I’d done a good job. With the hindsight of a year, I could see the obvious flaws. Not only was it rushed, with frantic typing right up until the deadline, but I’d missed the mark in several other ways. The judges wanted to know what I’d learn from the programme and how I’d engage with it deeply; they didn’t want a story of how we “just needed some money thank you very much”. They didn’t want a broad overview of my sector and a statement that we’re different; they wanted the headfirst deep dive into the market with operate within. In a world where feedback can often be frustratingly hard to find, we often forget we can give it to ourselves.
Winning the DBACE award in 2022 has undoubtedly changed my life and the trajectory of Journo Resources — and I’d deeply love to see more journalists making the shortlist this year. To help you create your own feedback, I’m not only sharing our winning application and video, but the one that didn’t make the shortlist too. I’m sure there’s still plenty that can be improved upon in both (feedback is ongoing, after all); but we all benefit when we share resources. Entries close at the end of the month — please do drop me an email if I can help you with your application!
