Jobs and Opps at Bristol24/7, Construction Wave, The Times, Frieze, and Many, Many More 🌊
Everything you should apply for this week and beyond.
I have always been fascinated by money. Not necessarily by making it — though that has, of course, been important to surviving — but by the way it makes us act and feel. I can still feel the pricks of anger in my stomach after discovering a new colleague at an old job was being paid more than me for the same role, just weeks after a drawn-out and unsuccessful pay battle myself.
Even now, the involuntary money dances seem to happen everywhere. It’s when I feel sick trying to say a number to a client that my male co-director would happily blurt out. It’s the freelance Facebook groups descending into a moral frenzy after a writer reveals they desperately took a shitty rate. It’s the idea that sharing our salaries should be a radical act, when actually it’s something that should feel as normal as asking your hot cup of choice. Mine’s a hot chocolate and £33,075pa, thanks for asking.
Money transparency has long been a building block of Journo Resources — I don’t believe we can solve any of these reactions without talking. It’s why we encourage people to tell us their salaries and freelance rates and why we refuse adverts that don’t list a salary range, no matter who they are. But there’s always more to do — and in the day-to-day of writing, admin, and life, it can sometimes get siloed to a corner, rather than getting talked about explicitly.
So, I’m excited to say that our new events series is putting the spotlight solely on cash. The Money Series kicks off on Thursday, with a series of open and practical workshops designed to help you find clarity and confidence about money. We’ll be talking about how to make more of it, know how much you should ask for, and make the most of it when you do have. Our first three events are already live and we hope to see you there — but do let us know what else you’d like to see from us!
