Jobs and Opps at Bloomsbury, The Bookseller, ITV News, Masse, And Many More đ
Everything you want to apply for this week.
Hello, good evening â itâs Hannah here. Howâs everyone doing?Â
Rather depressingly, in 2023, The National Literacy Trust recorded the lowest levels of reading enjoyment since it began surveying children in 2005. There are myriad reasons for this â including socioeconomic factors and a widening attainment gap worsened by disproportionate education access during the pandemic.Â
My mumâs a primary school teacher, so I was lucky to grow up in a house full of books. My love for reading definitely inspired my love for writing. But as I got older, I started reading less. âI just donât have time,â Iâd tell myself. But I did have time. I just chose to do other things. This year, however, Iâve started making more time for reading, including fully utilising my local library. It was my younger sister who encouraged me. Ironically, she wasnât a keen reader as a child. When our mum took us to the library, sheâd purposefully choose the books with the biggest text so they wouldnât take much time to read. Mum even took her for an eye test because of it, but it turns out she had 20/20 vision â she preferred to watch something rather than read.
Anyhow, after her first year at university and faced with a gloriously long summer holiday, reluctantly, she picked up a book. And she hasnât stopped reading since. She says itâs helped calm her â following the words of someone elseâs story for a while, she says, is often a much-needed break from reality. She recommends the following to integrate reading into your everyday:
When you finish work and feel yourself turning from one screen to another, take the time to read a few pages or chapters and watch whatever after.
Instead of checking a screen first and last thing, read just before you go to bed and when you wake up â just a few pages is good.Â
Read outside â take your book whenever you go for a walk, and find somewhere nice to sit and read. Again, it doesnât matter for how long.
And, I would also say donât let people or social media tell you what is intellectual or important reading. Find what you like and enjoy; itâs the only way youâll finish the book. And although it might sound contradictory, donât make reading a responsibility. Fit those pages in here and there, and if you like what youâre reading, chances are, it wonât feel like a chore anyway.
