For me, turning up at a swimming pool without your swimming costume falls into classic nightmare territory. It’s akin to those dreams where you’re suddenly sitting your GCSEs again with zero preparation and in a subject you never studied in the first place. Or, the all-time classic, that all your teeth were falling out — a worry I’ve only recently managed to put to bed after tracking down a new dentist this year.
The problem with the swimming dream is that it’s much more likely to happen than secretly being put in for some exams or your canines giving up despite the all-clear from a certified teeth professional. There’s a very real chance you can forget your swimsuit on the way to the pool. And it’s slightly more of a problem than usual if you’ve just driven three and a half hours to get to the aforementioned pool as part of a slightly ridiculous bank holiday day trip.
So, what do you do when you turn up at the pool with two pairs of swimming trunks and not one costume? My initial brainstorm told me I had a couple of options, some slightly more feasible than others. After a quick inspection of my partner’s swimming shorts, I ruled out any way of making them work as a single garment. A quick Google told me there was a Sports Direct a short drive away. My knowledge of outdoor pools tells me there was probably a slightly gruffly lost property bucket somewhere.
None of these turned out to be the correct answer; upon taking a deep breath and disclosing my ridiculous failings to the lifeguards these wonderful people happened to have a crate of new swimming suits in their van, en route to their shop. I took an even deeper breath before telling them what size of swimsuit I needed and focused my eyes on the prize; a swim in the beautiful geothermal springs of Matlock Baths.
After completing the seven-hour round trip last night, I found myself feeling strangely proud of myself. It might sound small, but it would have been too easy to despair, to give up, and get angry at myself. Instead, I’d somehow managed to focus on what I could do, with the belief the problem could be solved — and that other people might want to help me sort it. Other things are undeniably harder to solve than some missing elastane, but it’s certainly an ethos I’ll etch on my kit bag.
PS. If you’re in the mood for other swimming-based content this week, I really enjoyed this from Lauren Potts (who’s also written for us). It’s about learning to swim at age 39. It’s also available to read on Apple News if you don’t have a Stylist sub.
