Today is also our sixth birthday, can you believe it!?! 🎉 🥳
Today, Journo Resources turns six. It’s been on my to-do list to write something about this for weeks – I always do every year. But this year I’ve struggled to put my thoughts into a sensible order. I’ve kept putting it off, and now it’s the night before. The truth is, a lot of stuff has changed for us over the last 12 months, and sometimes it’s hard to grapple quite how much. It’s hard to jump off the treadmill for a second.
The last 12 months were the first time I finally moved to working here full-time. We were joined by some incredible young people through Kickstart placements, and also now have an incredible deputy editor and membership manager. It still feels such a joy to be able to share a morning meeting with people who know the deal (and humour my cat pictures).
(Please enjoy this picture of my rescue cat Swirls celebrating our birthday.)
But this birthday also feels more changeful in other ways. As we move further from the strict lockdowns of the past few years, it’s staggering how much we’ve adapted and switched up what we do. The further we go, the more it seems to speed up. The stakes seem higher. As my partner would say, it feels like we’re building the plane while flying it.
Another reason I’m struggling to reflect this year is the growing number of hats I now juggle. Who knew there were so many hats?! I know how to run a pension scheme. I do the payroll on an app. I scour the internet to find the best people to sell job ads too. I pitch the business endlessly, and fail miserably at trying to post regularly to TikTok.
Journo Resources is now the biggest it’s ever been, on one of the smallest teams in the business. It’s difficult to take a breath. We only have one full-time staff member, but last year our resources were used by 200,000 people. We’ve published hundreds of job salaries for the first time. 90 percent of fellows went on to paid work in the media. And we’ve only gotten this far because of you.
It’s down to people like you who’ve believed in us, shared our work, contributed to the community, and trusted us with your donations. We couldn’t do it without you. While I can’t say for sure where we’ll be in a year, it certainly feels like we’re on the tipping point of something big. Now, more than ever, we need your help.
We have some exciting news about the site in a couple of weeks’ time (after my first ever two-week holiday) but in the meantime, please do read and share the full version of this piece online. And, if you can, please consider making a small regular donation on our Steady. It’s the best way we have of ensuring regular income to pay our bills and put money back into the community. Donations start from just £4 a month and include some incredible perks – and there’ll be more on that later…
Until next time – and thank you.💛
