Several application deadlines coming up!
Good evening, it’s Hannah again. For this week’s (officially award-winning, may I add) newsletter, I’ve been reflecting on my experiences of remote working over the last three years. It wouldn’t be a Tuesday evening if you didn’t get slightly existential, right?
Because of Covid, I did the final two years of university from my bedroom and have more or less worked in a remote context ever since. I am currently studying remotely for the NCTJ, which consists of three-hour evening classes after work. Sometimes I’m sitting for hours on end, and despite my watch’s passive-aggressive suggestions to maybe stand up for a bit, I can see a Hannah-shaped divot starting to emerge on my chair.
Don’t get me wrong; I love my job and adore the fact our tiny team connects from different corners of the country every morning over a coffee. The flexibility that working remotely allows is also great. It enables me to visit my boyfriend — who lives on the other side of the country — and work from anywhere. As Rebecca Broad said in our event about digital nomadism as a journalist last night, the freedom is really empowering.
The problem is, I don’t think I’m always all that good at remote working. In an office, you’d likely agree to a quick coffee with a colleague or a good old natter over the tea-making station, but I’ve found it quite difficult to take breaks throughout the day. Ironically, I put more pressure on my productivity when WFH.
Doom-scrolling on socials and seeing other twenty-somethings seemingly at the top of their working game, living the ‘big city dream’, never helps. While they’re having post-work cocktails, I’m watching Love Island with my parents and having arguments about the dishwasher.
Remote working can be wonderful — and is a privilege — but it’s okay to admit that it can be hard sometimes. From someone awful at taking breaks, this is your reminder to take more of them!
Anyway, we covered loads of interesting aspects of remote working and digital nomadism yesterday — including this incredible 12th-century chateau in Normandy that Bex had stayed and worked in. If you were at the event or are a Journo Resources member, look out for the recap notes and watch-back link in your inbox. If not, you’ll also be able to buy watch-back tickets for this event soon!
