Jobs and Opps at The Economist, PinkNews, the BBC, Manchester International Festival, and more
Let’s get this bread 🍞
Hello, friend! Journo Resources’ founder Jem is currently on holiday canoeing around Scotland, so it’s Catharina here with you today. I hope you have now logged off work and are starting to wind down :)
As I’m writing this newsletter, I am also logged on to a roundtable webinar in the background on abandoning the five-day work week, and it’s got me thinking about productivity and how we as a workforce have very much started shifting the way we think about work. Concepts such as the four-day work week are by no means new, but the Covid pandemic has definitely brought these thoughts to the forefront of work life. We are all still navigating these uncharted waters, but I think it’s safe to say that we are unlikely to regress back to a 955 in the post-pandemic world.
As a freelance editor and journalist, I do sometimes find myself craving the structure and social aspects of being in office five days a week, but on the whole it is hard to ignore the downsides to this traditional work model. Burnout, lack of creativity, decrease in productivity, lower job satisfaction — not to mention, this does not even necessarily equate to better quality work being produced!
It is high time we take it upon ourselves to reevaluate what our work truly means for us, what flexible work should look like, and how we can further upgrade “work-life balance” from being a buzzword to an actually actionable status. Once shared purposes, principles, and targets are properly established within a workplace, flexible work should take off without any decrease in the quality of work produced. We are on the cusp of a workplace revolution, and all it takes is for employers and business owners to trust in the people they have chosen to hire, and take a leap of faith.
Anyway, while Jem paddles around a loch up in Scotland, we’re working on launching something exciting very soon. In case you haven’t seen us yelling about it yet, JR has just celebrated our sixth birthday. We’d love to include you in our celebrations as we look back on how far we’ve come, the people we’ve helped, and the things we can do better. If you have five minutes to spare out of your day to film yourself answering a couple of short questions, please drop me a line on catharina@journoresources.org.uk. We’ll send you some goodies to say thanks if you can help us out!

[EVENT] Roundtable: Navigating An Overwhelmingly White Middle-Class Journalism Industry
We have a roundtable event coming up very soon on Wednesday July 13, which will delve into how journalism is still an inaccessible industry. Did you know over 80% of working journalists are from middle-class backgrounds and just 0.2% are from Black minority ethnic backgrounds?
We’ll be bringing together three working journalists who are leading independent news publications across the country. They’ll talk about the need for industry-wide change, as well as sharing their experiences as journalists of colour.
This is not one to be missed, so get your tickets now! 👇
Awesome! Lots of interesting stuff as always :)
