Jobs and Opps at Paranting Magazine, Time Out London, The Cannavist , Asian Sunday and Many, Many More 🌞
Plus, we share the data of the jobs that do and don't get views 📊
Last week, I wrote quite the essay about how graduate schemes aren’t the be all and end all of entry-level journalism. Yes, they’re amazing opportunities with great training and support, But, not only are they few and far between, there are also a whole range of other opportunities out which offer a lot of the same benefits.
Jack and I got to spend a lot of time talking through this last week (and the full masterclass is now available to watch back for free), but one of the things that stuck out the most for me was the raw numbers we were able to pull out. As a journalism jobs board, we have access to tonnes of raw data around what people are actually looking for and applying for. So, I wanted to share a small bit with you here, as often we get told things in abstract, and it feels like someone is just telling you a hunch.
The numbers above are views on some of our most popular jobs, as well as some that haven’t been viewed that much. As predicted big name schemes and internships score highly, some clocking up almost 4,000 views. Even if just 10 percent of those apply, you’re still looking at 400 people to compete against. On the other hand, jobs in regional/local media, social media, marketing/comms, and specialist gigs average far fewer. Even if everyone looking applied, you’re still competing with less people.
So, what to take from this? Firstly, pick the grad schemes you’re really passionate about and spend all the time needed to get that application right, rather than scatter-gunning them all. Secondly, take another look at those other other categories on the left hand side – most don’t require any specialist knowledge and will give you tonnes of training on the side. The road in journalism is winding, and where you start doesn’t mean it’s where you end up, or stay. Sometimes the best opportunities come from where you least expect.
