Everything you need to apply for this week and beyond š
Hi - Tom here introducing this weekās newsletter. Iām chairing a panel talk tomorrow about getting into journalism later in life which got me thinking about the resources and advice available to early-career journalists. Often the assumption is that those looking to get into the industry are fresh out of university or school and that journalism is their first career.
That doesnāt make a whole lot of sense considering how many journalists - anecdotally - spend years working in another industry. The BBCās Emily Maitlis was a documentary maker, Kia Abdullah worked in tech and John Amis was at one point a gramophone salesman. In fact, experiencing lots of different jobs can be advantageous when building a network or covering a particular beat.Ā
When entry-level schemes have an age limit and so much emphasis is placed on āyoung journalistsā, it seems as though the support for people transferring from one career to journalism is lacking. So, weāre opening up a different conversation tomorrow. Iāll be talking to Minreet Kaur, Lauren Crosby Medlicott and Richard Hansen about their experiences and attitudes towards them in the newsroom. It will be informal and practical, and some tickets are still available. It would be lovely to (virtually) see some friendly faces.
