Plus, meet our new deputy editor Catharina ✨
Hello, friend! This week’s newsletter is taken over by yours truly. My name is Catharina, and I’m delighted to be reaching out as the new deputy editor of Journo Resources. It’s been a week since I started, and I still find myself reeling a little when I remember that I now actually have a job.
After spending several years working in lifestyle media in Hong Kong, I moved back to these drizzly isles in late 2020, smack bang in the middle of the second Covid wave. My old editorial job was nice enough to keep me on for six months after I left the country, but I found myself floundering, halfway across the world and cut off from my closest friends, colleagues, and favourite bartenders. Not to mention the truly godforsaken hours to match Hong Kong’s time zone.
When the time came for me to properly start job searching in the UK, Journo Resources was my first port of call. I needed to refamiliarise myself with the industry here and wasn’t quite sure how or where to start. I remember one of the first things I had Googled being “average UK freelance writer rates” and “UK editorial wages”. Thank heavens JR was there to quickly set me on the right path – my browser swiftly filled up with tabs bearing the little JR logo with its signature green colour scheme.
One year, several breakdowns, and 90 job applications later (yes, I’ve kept track on a spreadsheet), it turns out the path I took has led me right back to where I started: to Journo Resources. I’m so excited to start bringing you a steady stream of resources and helpful advice. We will also be working on more social media stuff, because while job searching can be a full-time gig in itself, there’s no reason why the whole endeavour shouldn’t be more light-hearted. And, if there’s anything you’d like to recommend, you can always get in touch at catharina@journoresources.org.uk, or tweet me @catharinacheung.
