Jobs and Opps at EachOther, The Bureau, The Guardian, DJ Mag and Many, Many More 💥
Everything you should add to this week's application list 🦚
Last night, for the first time in more than two weeks I finally got to head back to the pool. It’s been a busy two weeks. I’m aware I’ve moaned about this in successive newsletters now, but it turns out moving house is really… hard? We’ve also been running a mind-melting number of events (including one in which I had to assert that, no, TikTok isn’t a swamp) and there’s been a scare on the family front.
The swimming pool is always my calm place. Despite the very best advances in technology, my notifications and emails can’t follow me into the water, no matter how hard they try. There’s also a calming regularity to it all – all you need to do is swim up and down. Endless lengths, whether you count them or not, are simple. You don’t need to think about what you’re doing, you’re just swimming in a preordained direction around a body of water.
In the short-term, swimming takes me away from journalism and my work. But, in the long-term it’s vital. Swimming forces me to stop thinking, it allows my mind to wander to places it wouldn’t when confronted with endless to-do-lists or screens. It’s where my best ideas actually happen. For me, swimming is my calm space – and it’s vital that we all have one, and take the time to use it. It doesn’t have to be swimming –it could be books, cooking, or looking after a pet squirrel like my new neighbours seem to be. The most important thing though, is that we have one, and that we prioritise the time it needs to keep us well.
