Jobs and Opps at Country & Town House, The Independent, Reader's Digest, FE Week and Many, Many More ☔️
Everything you should apply for this week and beyond.
Hello — it’s Hannah back again! I hope you’ve been keeping cool amidst what have been some very wild temperatures. I’ve been consuming Calippos by the dozen, reading up about heatwaves, and despairing at the words of climate science sceptics.
The last time we spoke, I was rambling on about running and how proud of myself I was for sticking at it. Well I’ve got a confession: I didn’t stick at it. To begin with, it was too hot, and then I was too tired, then I feared my dad would lap me at Parkrun because I’d been out too long. I went on holiday for a week (to Lisbon, which I would highly recommend), and my ability to run seemed like a distant ghost of the past. I mean, why would you run 5k when you could have a Pastel de Nata instead?
But yesterday evening, after receiving a Fitbit notification on my phone informing me that I’d averaged 48 steps per day, I thought it might be good — for my mental health, if anything — to attempt going for a run. And do you know what? I’m equally as proud of myself for going last night as I was for keeping at it before. I might have only managed one lap of the park, been incredibly exhausted, and had a few heart palpitations, but I did it.
It also made me consider how not doing something for a while is often the reason we don’t do it entirely. But I think there is a case for subverting that excuse because rest — particularly in such a fast-paced world — is positive. There’s this quote from the Nike Run App that says something along the lines of, “If you’re running right now, you’re a runner”. I think we can also apply this idea to other areas of life — like writing. It doesn’t matter if you’re out of practice or not as good as you were before: if you’re writing right now, you’re a writer.
