Jobs and Opps at Sky, Reach, Stylist, The Bookseller and Many More 🦉
All of the jobs and opportunities to apply for this week and beyond 🌤
I have a lot of frustrations with the journalism industry. I love it dearly, but it also has a lot of problems. It’s one of the main reasons I ended up setting up Journo Resources – I couldn’t find the information I needed anywhere, and neither could the people around me.
Amongst many other things, I find the opaque-ness of everything overwhelming. Whether it’s wondering how to format a CV, find a mentor, or get your Twitter account verified, if you’re not on the inside, it’s a shut shop. And we all know how this goes – if it’s just insiders who know the game, it’s only insiders who end up playing.
But, as well as trying to open up access to the publications that already exist, it’s also vital that we start thinking about the barriers to starting up something new. There are so many gaps in what’s covered and talked about in our industry – and there’s a huge disparity between who is actually able to create their own space in the first place.
Those already in the club can call upon their contacts, their savings, their investors, and kick off with a shiny launch complete with employees and plenty of budget. For those of us on the outside, it’s a hard slog. You’re juggling every part of journalism and running a business alone, alongside having to work a full-time job to pay your bills.
Of course, getting people into existing outlets is vital. But for us to truly start building a representative media, we need to start thinking about how new outlets happen. Who are investors reaching out to? What is the criteria for grants? Are we telling people how to apply for them? On a personal level, how are we supporting outlets outside of the money train? What news are we amplifying?
It’s a huge and complex problem, and there’s never an easy answer. But it only gets solved with both individual and systematic change.
