Jobs and Opps at Blue Peter, SocialStreets, The Bureau of Investigative Journalism and Many, Many More 🪱
Plus, please, please apply for DBACE 2023!
There’s not much to say up at the top here this week. I was ill at the end of last week, so have spent the last two days frantically trying to catch up with the immovable deadlines around me. It’s currently 5.30pm. This whole newsletter is still looking decidedly unfinished and it’s giving me a bit of a headache. Frankly, I’d like to sack it all off and go to the pool. However, I do want to flag one particular opportunity first.
Applications to DBACE 2023 close in just over a week’s time. Funded by Deutsche Bank, they reward creative entrepreneurs who have business ideas that make a positive social impact. It can be anything. We’re a social enterprise that helps people progress in journalism. Other journalism-themed winners over the years include the incredible Black Ballad and Naked Politics, by the wonderful Banseka Kayembe. But you could also make watercolour paints out of leftover cosmetics or sell jewellery handmade by people experiencing homelessness.

If you have an idea, I cannot urge you enough to send it in — I know so many of the people reading this newsletter have amazing side projects and dreams. I would love to see you supported to make them happen — and I only found this competition through a wonderful friend (who also runs an indy mag shop here). So take this as your sign to give it a go. They also scrapped the age limit this year, so it’s open to everyone.
They have tonnes of advice on their site about how to write a good application (which I devoured last year) and you can also see our winning application and video. You can also compare it to our application the year before which didn’t get shortlisted so you can see the difference — mainly around being open to learning.
As well as getting up to £20,000 in funding for your project, you’ll also get a business mentor, in-kind support from DBACE, a supportive cohort, and escape days to help hone in on how to make your business happen. I can honestly say it’s been the most valuable thing I’ve ever done in my career, and the knock-on effects for Journo Resources have been immense. In short, please apply!
